seduction of my rake_600x900

What’s a man to do when he’s attracted to a woman he can’t have? Bradford Kendall, the Duke of Weston, is in that very predicament, when his brother’s ex-wife shows up at his estate. Regina has always held an unnerving lure for him, and it’s a nuisance to have to deal with it, and her.
Regina Dewitt wants to find out what happened to her sister. The best place to start her search is where she disappeared—Weston Manor. It’s been a year, and clues will be scarce, but she’s determined. She didn’t count on how tempting the estate’s resident duke would be…
As they begin the search together, the question remains: Can they fight their growing desire?

He couldn’t give her anything to dig her heels in about. “I don’t want you here.” He kept repeating it to himself, but he failed to come up with a good excuse to make her leave.

Besides, it wasn’t entirely the truth. He wanted her. But he couldn’t have her. At least not yet. Not until Trenton threw her aside. Then he could give in to his baser instincts. One day, he had no doubt, she would be his. That day, unfortunately, was not this one.

Her eyes gleamed with something he couldn’t identify. She lifted her chin with a hint of defiance. “I hate to break it to you, but you don’t have a choice.”

Hell if he didn’t. Weston Manor was his home. He wasn’t required to let anyone in he didn’t want to. She had no idea who she was dealing with, but she was about to find out. In the past he’d been—nice—for lack of a better word. Now though, he didn’t have to be. There was no one around whose feelings he needed to protect. Regina meant nothing to him. “I don’t have to do anything.” He stared at her with a mulish expression. “If I don’t want you here, then it is my right to send you packing.”

He should probably be concerned about offending her. Trenton might become irate if he knew Bradford had kicked his wife out. He would deal with that downfall if or when it came. It was much better his step-brother believed him rude then the alternative. He didn’t trust himself to be alone with her.

“True,” she said and stepped even closer to him.

He could see the rise and fall of her breasts. He itched to feel them in the palm of his hands. Restraint was becoming harder and harder to maintain. Regina had to go and fast.

“Then do what I asked and leave.”

She raised an eyebrow. “I didn’t realize you’d actually asked. You demanded.” Regina licked her lips and flashed him a sinful smile. “And I so hoped we could get to know each other better.”

Ivar the Red by Victoria Vane

Publication Date: September 4, 2016

Genre: Medieval Romance

As the epic struggle to rule Brittany continues, Ivar the Red unexpectedly finds himself in charge of the Norse army after his brother, Valdrik, is severely wounded. Intensely loyal, Ivar is prepared to do everything to see their victory through—except taking a Breton wife. Nevertheless, Lady Emma of Quimper fascinates him more than any woman he’s ever known. Although her highborn status protects her from bondage, Ivar vows to claim her as his own.

Lady Emma of Quimper is determined to defend her home as fiercely as any knight, until she opens the gates to save an old friend from Viking invaders. But her trust has been misplaced, and she finds herself at the mercy of a bloodthirsty heathen—Ivar the Red. Pride keeps Emma from fully surrendering to the conquering lord of Quimper, even when she realizes he’s not quite the devil she imagined.

Ivar has always enjoyed a challenge, especially one from a beautiful Amazon with the heart of a warrior. Though she defies him at every turn, Ivar deals gently with Emma—until she betrays his trust and escapes. Refusing to be made a fool, Ivar sets out to recover his captive who is determined to return to Quimper at the head of an army. When Ivar finds her in the clutches of death, he suddenly realizes she matters far more than his injured pride and sexual desire. He will do anything to save her and give up everything to make her his.

He stood over her, looking satisfied with thumbs once more hooked in his belt.  “Will you swear fealty? Do you now submit to me as your lord?”

She glared up at him with all the venom she could muster. She’d never been so humiliated.  “Never! I will never acknowledge you as anything more than the savage you have proven yourself to be.”

“You have no conception of savagery. I have seen horrors you could never even imagine. By comparison, I have shown you nothing but forbearance and restraint.”

“You beat me and dare to call it restraint?”

He rocked back on his heels with a roar of laughter. “Beat you? I merely warmed your backside, which is no more than your sire should have done long ago.” He pulled her to her feet.  “If you please me well, I will treat you as a queen, but if you continue your insolence I will be forced to make an example of you.”

She swallowed against the lump that had formed in her throat. “What do you mean by example?” Her mind was already racing with wild visions of Viking barbarism.

“We Norse have many creative punishments.  I cannot make you a slave, but I can keep you prisoner. Mayhap it would amuse me to keep you in a cage.”

“A cage? Like a wild animal?” Her blood froze. Would he really carry out such a heinous threat?

“Aye,” he answered her unspoken question. “I could even hang you on the top of this keep where the eagles nest and let the eaglets pick at your flesh. More loathsome to thee than the light-hued snake to men, shall you become. So fearful to see, that all will marvel at thy hideousness.”

The threat struck pure terror in her heart. Was he really so cruel?

“Perhaps warming my bed is not such a horrible prospect after all?” he suggested softly. Norsemen were known for their brutality, but crinkled lines at the corners of his eyes and the twitch on one side of his mouth gave her pause. Was he still secretly laughing at her? Emma’s throat tightened as his calloused, blood-covered hands anchored on her shoulders. “Give yourself to me freely and you will have no cause for complaint.”

She focused on his hands rather than his words.  “You’ve stained my best tunic,” she remarked with disgust.

He cocked a brow mockingly. “My bloody appearance offends you?”

“Everything about you offends me,” she answered with a curl of her lip.  “You’re filthy and you stink. I would rather bed in the pigsty.”

He shrugged. “Your wish is easily granted, but I’ll give you time to reconsider. Just know this, Lady Emma, I make my offer only once, so think carefully before you answer.”

Ivar’s gaze followed Emma as she stormed from the chamber, escorted by two of his men. Damn her for scorning him! He’d hoped to avoid heavy-handed measures, but all of his attempts to reason with her had failed. One way or another, he vowed to teach her respect. If he could not win her goodwill, he would bend her by any means—fair or foul.

Knowing she wouldn’t recognize the Norse tale, he’d fed her fear with by stealing from the story of Freyr and the giantess. When he’d mentioned the cage, his fearless Valkyrie suddenly had the look of a frightened sheep. Her horrified expression and sudden pallor of her face told him that she believed him capable of any atrocity. He’d fought hard to suppress his laughter. She must truly think him a fiend, but if that’s what it took, so be it. He wouldn’t physically force her capitulation, but would let her stew in the uncertainty of her fate. By morning, he was certain she’d have a change of heart.

I’ve posted about this in some form in the past. How we become friends with certain people but for whatever reason the relationship falls flat and before you know it you’re not talking to that person anymore. This post is food for thought. Take what you want from it. Learn, love, and live your life to the best of your ability. Sometimes that is all you can do.

These days I have some friends I know I can count on no matter what. Even if we go days without talking. These are the people that make your life better. It is a blessing to have them and you can’t imagine what life would be like if they became one of the lost ones. Take a moment, a deep breath, and think things through.

Today I’ve learned another thing. That when the chips are down you find out exactly what people can be like when your back is up against a wall. I write books, something I love. I’ve made friends, acquaintances, and distant contact with other authors as I set out to do this. It is a blessing to have met so many amazing people. But, as with all things, there are those that can’t stop drama from entering into the circle. That isn’t what friendship is supposed to be.

I’m here to say: Think before you go down that rabbit hole. Is it really worth it? Who are you hurting by your actions? Is it making things better or worse? What person does it REALLY impact?

I’m about running on empty dealing with the aftermath of the decisions of others. Choices I had no part in, but people I considered friends and colleagues made. My stomach hurts, I’ve gotten little to no sleep, and my brain is fried. But through it all I’ve learned who I can truly count on and who isn’t worth the energy. It was a hard lesson but in the end maybe this is for the best. I wish everyone the best, but in the future please keep your issues where they belong–at your doorstep.

So this is my annual friendship blog. I guess it wouldn’t be me if I didn’t have one every now and then. Big hugs to those peeps who are in my life. The ones that have my back and all that entails. You know who you are.

911timeline-hToday is one that every one in the United States stops to remember. There are even some in other countries who can’t help but recall what it means. It’s a day of remembrance.

For me it is a double whammy. Do I remember where I was? Yes I do. It wasn’t like any other day for me. September 11 would have been a day I stopped to remember even if the tragedy had never happened. The terrorist attack only made it that much worse for my family.

Because it is my oldest brother’s birthday. What made this day was knowing we’d never be able to wish him a happy birthday ever again. We lost him 4 years earlier in a car accident. He left behind a wife and a four month old daughter. He was only twenty-five years old. My heart still hurts today and it was almost twenty years ago. He would have been forty-four this year.

So what was I doing on that fateful day? I was packing up my vehicle to go visit my mother in Muskegon, MI. It was an almost four hour drive from where I lived at the time. My boys were three years old and nine months. My mother took Glen’s death hard and his birthday was one of those days she did better surrounded by family. As I was strapping the baby in the car seat my phone started to ring. I fished it out of my purse and my mother’s voice filled my ears. She was in a panic watching the news. I had no idea what she was talking about. I told her I’d call her back. I turned the radio on and listened to it in shock for several minutes. I couldn’t believe what was happening.

I listened to the radio the entire drive to my mother’s. My brother’s birthday had become something different. It was a tragedy that the world would always remember. It wasn’t a good thing we could cherish. It was heartbreaking for so many people. It is a day I will never forget for entirely different reasons.

My mother is no longer with us. We have had a lot of tragedy in my family. Some might say more than any one could bear. But that too is part of life. So today I wished Glen a Happy Birthday. He is up in heaven with my mother, my father, my grandparents, and yes his daughter who we lost to a fire not too long ago. I have to take comfort in knowing they have each other now.

This is all at the forefront of my mind today for a lot of reasons. Seeing all the posts about people talking about where they were that day made it all come back. Nathan (my youngest) and I were discussing it yesterday. He’d said his American History teacher said their parents would know where they were when the 9/11 attacks hit. He didn’t believe him. My child thought I’d have been sleeping that early in the morning (because I do like to sleep in when I can). He didn’t realize that an infant doesn’t allow for mornings of sleeping in and that I only have that luxury now that they are both teenagers. So this post is for him, and anyone who might be curious.

It is a day I will never forget, but it’s more than that. It is a day of remembrance for the world. I for one won’t live in terror. Life is meant to be lived free of any kind of oppression. That is what makes our country so wonderful. Even when it seems like there is nothing good around us we have that. This is the land of the free for a reason. We don’t have to agree with the person’ next to us’s opinion. Take this day to appreciate what we have and forget about the things we don’t agree with. Give those you love a hug and tell them you love them. There are some people who can’t do that. They lost their love ones in this tragedy and would give anything for one more chance to do what a lot of us take for granted.
